COVID-19 – What do we know about this virus
As a company that produces survival films on a variety of subjects, we know and understand that our audience has concerns with the Coronavirus. Keep in mind that we are not experts in this field, nor have we produced any films about Pandemics. Just like you, we are trying to piece together the truth.
Here are a few brief updates on what’s now been classified as a global pandemic:
- A lot of people have recovered from this virus, some had very mild symptoms
- Testing has been and still is far behind the curve, so do we really know what the numbers are?
- Elderly and those with auto-immune disorders are more susceptible
- Children can carry the virus, but no one under age 10 had died thus far
- Global panic is tanking stock markets
- Schools and University cancellations are starting to become more frequent
- States are declaring states of emergencies to free up federal aid
- Cities and town will start to see more quarantine zones
- The US is far behind on testing due to the 1st batch being flawed
A study that has yet to be peer-reviewed from scientists at Princeton, the University of CA, and National Institute of Health (NIH), posted yesterday showing that COVID-19 could remain viable in the air “up to 3 hours post aerosolization” – The Hill
Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said during a House oversight committee hearing that “COVID-19” is likely 10 times more lethal than the seasonal flu.
What does all this mean? Well, we just aren’t sure yet because first, we likely won’t have the correct data coming out of China due to government secrecy, and we have hardly tested any Americans yet, so we don’t know the true infection numbers.
Without those numbers, we cannot reasonably say what the mortality rate is. Most experts believe many healthy Americans could only see mild symptoms if they are infected, but those with underlying medical conditions are at a much higher risk, as we’ve seen in Washington State.
That said, even if the coronavirus has a very low mortality rate, one thing is for certain; the media has hyped COVID-19 like it’s the end of the world, and some people have started to panic beyond all reason. Somehow this country has even managed to politicize this outbreak, which is maddening, to say the least.
Whether this turns out to rival the Spanish Flu of 1918 or fizzle out like H1N1, Zika, Ebola and others, the fear alone may drive this country into a recession, or even a full-blown depression or even a collapse.
Also consider the fact that this Pandemic is right on the heels of the 2020 Presidential election, which some think could be the catalyst for country-wide riots depending on the results. Imagine throwing a Pandemic and financial collapse in the mix. Now you’re talking about the perfect storm.
Is it time to “bugout”? Well, we don’t think so, not yet anyway. That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t temporarily avoid large gatherings, avoid traveling on public transportation, etc., at least until more facts are in and we understand exactly what we are dealing with.
Above all else, STAY CALM. You’ve been preparing for this most of your lives. Most of you are likely stocked up with food and water if you must stay put for a while. Do not brush this off like it’s nothing if you are not an infectious disease professional, and at the same time, I probably wouldn’t pack your bugout bag and head for the hills just yet either.
What are your thoughts?
